There’s a reason why the British Grand Prix at Silverstone is one of the crown jewels of the Formula 1 calendar. It’s fast, it’s historic, and it’s packed with passionate fans who live and breathe motorsport. For over 70 years, this legendary track has been the stage for some of the sport’s most unforgettable moments and with the Silverstone Grand Prix 2025 approaching, what better time to look back at a few of the most iconic highlights?
Whether you’re a lifelong F1 fan or simply love the energy of race day, here are some of the most memorable British Grand Prix moments that helped shape Silverstone into the legend it is today.
1950 – The First Ever Formula 1 World Championship Race
Let’s start at the very beginning. On 13th May 1950, Silverstone hosted the inaugural race of the Formula 1 World Championship, the first official F1 race as we know it today. The event was attended by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, marking a royal seal of approval for a sport that would soon become a global phenomenon.
Italian legend Giuseppe Farina took the win in his Alfa Romeo, but it was the birth of something far bigger, the start of a new era in motorsport.
1987 – Mansell vs. Piquet and the Crowd Invasion
If you ask a British F1 fan for their favourite Silverstone memory, there’s a good chance they’ll say Nigel Mansell in 1987. After a dramatic battle with teammate Nelson Piquet, Mansell pulled off a bold overtake with just three laps to go, sending the home crowd into absolute raptures.
After taking the chequered flag, Mansell ran out of fuel and thousands of fans stormed the track to celebrate with their hero. It was one of the purest displays of racing passion you’ll ever see.
1998 – Schumacher Wins… in the Pit Lane?
The 1998 British Grand Prix gave us one of the strangest finishes in F1 history. Michael Schumacher was handed a time penalty in the closing laps but in a bizarre twist, Ferrari instructed him to serve it on the very last lap, pulling into the pit lane to cross the finish line before the penalty could be applied.
It caused confusion, protests, and even a review by the stewards but the win stood, and the moment remains one of the most controversial in British GP history.
2008 – Hamilton Masterclass in the Wet
In classic British fashion, the 2008 race was held under torrential rain. But it turned into a defining moment for Lewis Hamilton, who put on an absolute clinic in wet-weather driving.
Starting fourth, he stormed into the lead and lapped most of the field in treacherous conditions to take a win by over a minute. It was the kind of drive that marked him out as a future world champion and a true Silverstone legend.
2021 – Hamilton vs. Verstappen Sparks Fireworks
One of the most talked-about moments in recent memory? The controversial clash between Hamilton and Verstappen at Copse Corner on the opening lap in 2021. Verstappen was sent into the barriers, and the incident sparked debate across the F1 world but Hamilton went on to win in front of a roaring home crowd.
Love it or hate it, it’s a moment that added even more drama to Silverstone’s rich racing history.
