Some trips are about completely switching off. Others are about discovering somewhere new. Every now and then, you find one that does both – and this Iceland escape was exactly that.
Earlier this month, my wife and I experienced the Three-Night Reykjavik Escape with Blue Lagoon Experience, and it turned out to be the perfect introduction to Iceland’s culture, cuisine and extraordinary natural scenery.
A Base in the Heart of Reykjavik
We stayed in one of the KEA Luxury Hotels in central Reykjavik, which made exploring the city incredibly easy. Reykjavik has a brilliant balance to it – modern yet cosy, lively but never overwhelming.
From wandering between cafés and independent boutiques to taking in the colourful streets, snow-dusted rooftops and coastal views, having such a central base meant we could explore at our own pace while always having somewhere comfortable to return to.
One particularly memorable moment was visiting what the locals call ‘the pond’ – Tjörnin – which was completely frozen during our stay. Seeing locals out ice skating in the heart of the city, surrounded by winter scenery, felt like a real glimpse into everyday life in Reykjavik.
An Iconic Icelandic Experience: The Blue Lagoon
One of the clear highlights of the trip was our visit to the Blue Lagoon – and it really does live up to the hype.
Stepping into the warm, mineral-rich water surrounded by black lava fields and crisp Icelandic air was instantly calming. The trip included a silica mud mask and a complimentary drink, both of which added to the feeling that this was something truly special.
It’s an experience that feels indulgent yet completely natural, and one that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Geysers, Landscapes & Icelandic Wonders
Beyond Reykjavik, we also had the chance to experience some of Iceland’s incredible natural phenomena, including visiting both the Geysir and Strokkur geysers. Watching Strokkur erupt every few minutes, sending boiling water high into the air, was a reminder of just how powerful and unpredictable Iceland’s landscape can be.
Exploring also extended to food. Icelandic cuisine is adventurous and varied, with menus that reflect the country’s deep connection to its landscape and traditions – offering plenty to discover for those keen to try something new.
As an added bonus, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights during our stay – an unforgettable moment and the perfect reminder of just how special Iceland can be in winter.
Dining Inside a Lava Cliff
Another standout moment was lunch at Lava Restaurant, a striking space built directly into an 800-year-old lava cliff.
We enjoyed a three-course set lunch surrounded by volcanic rock and dramatic views – a setting you simply don’t forget. The food was exceptional, and the combination of modern Icelandic cuisine with such a raw natural backdrop made it feel like a genuinely unique dining experience.
The Perfect Balance of Luxury and Adventure
Over the three nights, the trip delivered exactly what we were hoping for – a seamless blend of relaxation, exploration and understated luxury. From staying in the heart of Reykjavik to experiencing bucket-list moments like the Blue Lagoon, frozen city lakes, erupting geysers and even the Northern Lights, everything felt thoughtfully put together.
For couples looking for something a little different – a break that combines wellness, culture and nature – this Iceland escape is a truly special experience and one I’d highly recommend.
